Description

Video of this: [link]
This is one of a series of 40 photos I took yesterday, June 14, 2010, of the US Air Force's operating location at Groom Lake, commonly known as "Area 51" (among other names), on a flight from Phoenix to Reno with 20x optical zoom from 32,000 ft, starting at about 36.40N 116.16W and ending at about 37.12N 117.02W, with the closest approach at approximately 36.63N, 116.50W, about 57.5 miles away from the base. From the vantage point of the first picture, the base is about 63.78 miles at 16.95 degrees, and from the vantage point of the last picture, about 68.92 miles at 82.41 degrees, making a 65.46-degree sweep around the base. From the vantage point of the closest picture, the base is about 57.26 miles at 41.75 degrees.

This is the first and only photo in the series that is being submitted to my gallery, to prevent super-cluttering. The rest are being submitted to my Scrapbook. I'll add links to them later, after I've submitted them all....if I feel like it. Otherwise, if you want to see more, just hop over to my Scrapbook.

The images were manually level-adjusted individually to remove heavy atmospheric haze. As a consequence of that manual adjustment, they vary somewhat in color from picture to picture. Other than that adjustment, they are unedited and presented at their original resolution of 3648x2736 (10-Megapixel). Despite the high resoultion, they are quite fuzzy due to the great distance and the multi-paned window through which they were taken, so there probably isn't much reason to download the original. The full-view size should be sufficient. All photos that I took of the base and dry lake are presented here, regardless of quality. None have been skipped. The photos were taken while recording a 20 minute 9 second video, during which I recognized Groom Lake in the distance and began taking pictures, but did not stop recording video (well, except for the second of video that is missed when taking a picture during it).

The coordinates are taken from actual reporting data by the aircraft during that flight, available at [link]
